Special to the Opelika Observer

The Opelika SeaDawgs swim team had a great weekend at this year’s ARPA state swimming and diving championships. The Opelika SportsPlex and Opelika Parks and Recreation staff were the proud host of this year’s event.

OHS Dawgs prepare for season opener Aug. 31

The Opelika Bulldogs will start “fall” or “summer” practice Monday. It’s hard to call it “fall” when it’s 95-plus degrees out and about that much humidity. Coach Brian Blackmon is starting his fourth season as head coach and Athletic Director.

The Dawgs have 90-plus players who will start practicing for the season opener on Aug. 31 at Benjamin Russell in Alex City.

The coaches will be looking to find a starting quarterback, a running back, wide receivers and to solidify the offensive line. The defense has more experience than offense and special teams.

They will also have to find a deep snapper, a punter and a kicker.

OHS will be young, as you can tell, but should have a good team.

The schedule is tough with region foes Central, Smiths Station, Auburn and Carver along with a non-region game at Hoover. These teams almost always make the playoffs. The other two non-region games, at Benjamin Russell and a home game with Valley makes the OHS schedule one of toughest schedules in the state.

The Thursday game originally scheduled for Sept. 20 with Carver at Crampton Bowl has been moved to Saturday Sept. 22 because Alabama State has changed their game to Sept. 20 because ESPNU wants to put the game on TV.

The Opelika All-Sports Booster club will hold a “Meet the Bulldogs” event on Aug. 20, at Bulldog Stadium. The event is free and open to the public and will give the fans a chance to see the middle school teams, varsity football team, ninth grade football team, volleyball team, cross country team, cheerleaders and the band. Each of these groups will be introduced on the field.

You can join the Booster Club for $30, buy Opelika flags, signs, huggers, Opelika Under Armour polo shirts, t-shirts, stadium cushions and other Opelika items during the program.

If you join the Booster Club, you will receive an Opelika Bulldog car tag.

The corporate sponsor dinner will be held later in the school year. The All-Sports Booster board made this decision because we want to spread things out instead of cramming everything in during football season.

Season tickets will go on sale in August. Stay tuned for the dates and times.

The senior cheerleaders have been invited to march in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Coach Brandy Riddle will release more details later.

I want to thank the cheerleaders, Christy Milner, Emily Severin and the many people that help sell program ads. We have reached an all-time high in sales. Congratulations!

Opelika Dixie Boys All-Star Team Headed to World Series

The Opelika Dixie Boys All-Star team (14-year-olds) is heading to Covington, Ga., for the Dixie Boys World Series.

Opelika will represent Alabama and will wear uniforms with “Alabama” on their jersey. There are 11 states represented, along with the host team, Covington.

This will be the second trip to the World Series for this team. Last year, as 13 year olds, they finished third in the World Series.

Alabama (Opelika) will open up on Aug.4, at 6 p.m. vs. Mississippi.

The tournament is a double-elimination format and will end on Aug. 8.

You can hear all of the games on 97.7 KICKER FM where I will be broadcasting the games live.

Carver football game rescheduled

Building construction continues at Opelika High School. The front parking lot should be completed within the next week. Inside the building, Main Street looks different. It is dirt. The floor has been dug up and the back of the north part of the school is gone. The area at the end of Main Street, the kitchen and the wing beside the kitchen has been knocked down.

This will be where the first part of the new construction starts. Construction continues on the school and outside where the portable classrooms are located. They are finishing this area so it will be ready for students Aug. 20.

OHS Football

The football team continues to workout everyday. The team lifts weights and works on conditioning.

Coach Brian Blackmon said it looks like we will play Carver Saturday September 21 at 7 p.m. at Crampton Bowl in Montgomery. Blackmon has been trying to convince Coach Parrish to move the game to Opelika and play on Friday night and we would travel to Carver next year. He offered to split the gate if the game were played in Opelika, but “no” was the answer.

You can still join the Corporate Sponsor plan. Please call me at (334) 319-0467 or call OHS at (334) 745-9715 and leave your name. The packages start at $500 and go up to $1,200.

Thank You

I wanted to give a special THANK YOU to WZMG 910 AM radio personality, Richard LaGrand, for asking his listeners to donate fans for people that do not have air- conditioned houses. Richard presents these fans to his listeners on a need basis.

Thank you, Richard!

Dixie Boys baseball team wins District 5 tournament

by D. Mark Mitchell

Sports Editor

The Dixie Youth Major Ozone All-Star team (11 and 12-year-olds) are traveling to Fairhope today for the State Tournament, which begins on Saturday July 14.

This is a double elimination tournament with the winner advancing to the World Series.

The Opelika Dixie Boys  (14-year-olds) All-Star team won the District 5 tournament to advance to the State Tournament in Piedmont on July 20. The team eased through the 11 team district tournament with little trouble. This will be the second trip to the State Tournament for this team. They won the State and finished third in the World Series last year as 13-year-olds.

You can hear the games on WKKR 97.7 or WMXA 96.7 beginning Saturday July 21.

The Opelika Junior Dixie Boys (13-year-olds) will be the host team for the State Tournament next Friday, July 20, at Harrelson Field at West Ridge Park.

This will be a seven-team tournament with the winner advancing to the World Series in Virginia. The tournament will start Friday with opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. at West Ridge. A home run derby contest will be held between each team.

This tournament will bring six teams from out of town that will be staying until they are eliminated. The finals are scheduled for Wednesday, July 25.

Tonight: Crampton Bowl

The Opelika High School Athletic Department took the week off due to the AHSAA all-star week in Montgomery. Coach Brian Blackmon is the Offensive Coordinator for the South All-Star football team. Opelika will have two players, Braden Rogers and Demarius Howard, on the South squad. The game will be played tonight at Crampton Bowl in Montgomery.

T.J. Pressley, rising senior, represented Opelika in the All-Star basketball game. Pressley averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game last season as a junior.

The OHS football schedule will have a late change. The OHS vs. Carver game scheduled for Thursday, September 20th at Crampton Bowl in Montgomery has to be moved. Alabama State has a football game scheduled for the same night that will be televised on ESPN2.

The two coaches (OHS and Carver) have been trying to find a solution. The options are: 1. move the game to Opelika on Friday, Sept. 21; 2. play at Crampton Bowl on Saturday, Sept. 22, (the same day Auburn University hosts LSU) or 3. play at Crampton Bowl on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

Wow!

Let’s hope the game can be changed to Opelika and the next season Opelika will travel to Carver. This would give the Dawgs five home games and five road games the next two seasons.

Stay tuned for the final decision.

Coaching Changes

Athletic Director and head football coach Bryan Blackmon is trying to find a coach to replace Ryan Thompson, who took a job at Gulf Shores High School. Thompson was the Assistant Head Coach in football and Head Wrestling Coach.

Blackmon has been short two coaches since last year when Tommy Jackson left for Auburn University and SaJason Finley left to join the staff at Arkansas State.

The rumor is that Opelika has asked former Auburn University baseball-football player and former major league baseball player Gabe Gross to join the staff.
