Dawgs de-horn Rams 35-0

It was a home game against a former rival, OHS homecoming and the Bulldogs were coming off a big region loss to Carver. Opelika’s football team needed something good to happen, and it did. The Dawgs dominated the Valley Rams 35-0. Every player who was not injured, played, including three quarterbacks, five running backs, four place kickers and three-deep at every position.

Opelika was never in trouble despite only leading 14-0 at halftime. Valley, a team that used to play the Bulldogs every year from 1957-1997, was not the powerful Valley-machine that many of us remembered. This was a program that had head coaches like Doug Lockredge, Robert Maddox and Steve White.

These Valley Rams have gone through five head coaches in four years. Current head coach Marshon Harper was named head coach just three days before the season opener against Auburn after former head coach John Wells resigned before coaching a game.

Opelika moved up and down the field at will most of the game. Quarterback Mathew Christian was 12-19 for 201 passing yards. Marquise Fulton caught eight passes for 133 yards. T.J. Griffen rushed 12 times for 80 yards. The defense only allowed 160 yards, despite playing many players while Valley kept their first team in through out the game.

The Bulldogs held the Rams on their first possession and took over at its own 35 after the punt. Seven plays later Griffen scored his first of three TDs, running six yards into the end zone, Traylor added the PAT and it was 7-0.

Griffen’s second score was on a 14-yard run and his last was a two-yard scamper early in the third quarter. Receiver Eligha Singleton caught a 47-yard pass from Mathew Christian for a touchdown while Dequan Carter finished the scoring with a four-yard run for a touchdown with four minutes left in the game.

Kickers Chaz Blackmon, John Dukes and Justin Traylor added extra points.

Opelika head coach Brian Blackmon was happy, but calm after the win.

“It’s a game we should have won and we did. We need to work on a few things including our passing game. I was happy with the way our guys threw and caught the ball tonight. Our defense played hard and got a shutout. We have a little momentum but a long road ahead of us,” Blackmon said during his post game radio show.

Opelika traveled to Montgomery last night to play Lanier in a very important region game. At press time the game was not complete.

The remainder of the schedule is tough: Oct. 12 at Smiths Station, Oct. 19 (senior night and last regular season home game) against Jeff Davis, Oct. 26 at Auburn in the last region game and at Hoover on Thursday, Nov. 1.

If we win the next three games, the Auburn game could decide the region championship. That’s right! The region championship. Opelika fans need to cheer for AHS and OHS to win their next three games. That would set up a showdown at the “Duck” on Oct. 26 for the region title.

Cross Country

The Opelika varsity and middle school cross country teams participated in the Montgomery Academy Invitational in Montgomery last week. The Opelika Middle School boys finished first while the girls placed second. Ben Garner finished first in the 3200-meter run, Palmer Long placed second, Will Overstreet finished fourth, Keshawn Shaw sixth and Braden Holloway was seventh.

The OMS girls finished second overall. Abby Alcantara was fourth, Brittney Golden was fifth and Emma Royal was sixth. Coach Jen Neighbors was proud of the two teams. Finishing in first and second in a big event was a confidence builder for the teams.

The varsity boys placed second as a team. Shakiel Parker had the highest finish, sixth; Kane Barrett was 13th; J.R. Thrash was 20th and Ben Bryant and Kevin Lazenby tied for 21st.

The varsity girls finished third led by Emma Garner’s third place finish.

A select few are heading to Moulton this weekend for the “Jesse Owens Invitational.” This will give the group an event on the course where the state meet is held.

All-Sports Booster Club

The Opelika All-Sports Booster club will be holding a “Beat Auburn” Booster Club meeting on Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Irish Bred Pub. Everyone is invited and you can order off the menu if you would like to eat. Coach Brian Blackmon will be on hand to discuss the Opelika vs. Auburn game.

Where Are They Now

Former Bulldog quarterback (2009) and Opelika High School graduate David Thomas is the starting quarterback for Miles College in Birmingham (actually it’s in Fairfield). Thomas was in the National Honor Society at OHS and is on the way to graduating on time from Miles.

Last season he was named to the All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) team and is having another great year this year. Last week Thomas threw for 368 yards while rushing for another 68 yards.

Great job, David!

Carver defeats Opelika 47-27 at Crampton Bowl

The Carver Wolverines (3-1, R-2-1) defeated Opelika (2-2, R-2-1) 47-27 last Saturday night in Montgomery at Crampton Bowl. The two teams were forced to play on Saturday night because ASU played a TV game on Thursday at Crampton Bowl. Auburn University quarterback commit Jeremy Johnson passed for 303 yards while rushing for 67 yards and scored four touchdowns to help his team win.

The Wolverines scored early and often in the first half. On Carver’s first play on offense Johnson found Landy Capetillo wide open running down the sideline for a 70-yard TD.

Opelika’s inability to move the ball early in the game played precisely into Carver’s game plan.

The second Carver possession was not as easy as the first. They converted three long third downs and scored their second touchdown on a two-yard run to lead 14-0 with 5:34 left in the opening quarter.

The Dawgs charged back to tie the game at 14-14 after Jakell Mitchell ran three yards for a score and T.J. Griffen scampered 16 yards to tie the game. (Justin Traylor converted both PATs.) The Wolverines used 45 seconds to score their third touchdown, a 53-yard pass to Draequon Murphy to break the tie. Opelika started their next possession at their own 11-yard line. The Bulldogs tried a pass which was intercepted and turned into a Carver touchdown.

Carver held Opelika again and took over at their 40-yard line. Opelika forced a Carver field goal attempt which was wide left, but a controversial roughing the kicker penalty on Opelika resulted in the Wolverines being awarded a first down and then scoring the last TD of the half to lead 34-14 at the break.

In the second half, each team scored 13 points to make the final 47-27.

Coach Brian Blackmon summed up the loss, “That was a good ole’ fashioned tail kicking we got tonight. I will have to look at the film with our coaches and see what we need to do to get better.”

The loss was Opelika’s first in region play. OHS needs to win out and hope Auburn wins all their region games until the two teams meet later in the season. If that happens OHS can still win the region by beating the Tigers.

Opelika will host Valley for homecoming tonight at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.

The two teams last met in 1997 when OHS won, 42-12. The first game between the two school that are about 20 miles apart was in 1953, when the Bulldogs won, 24-18.

Valley holds an overall 22-18 advantage over Opelika. So the Rams and the Bulldogs have been rivals for a long time and have played many close games over the years.

Valley comes to Bulldog Stadium fresh off a 37-0 loss to region foe Benjamin Russell. The Rams head Coach resigned three days before the season opener, leaving the team without a coach. Mashon Harper, a former player, graduate and then assistant coach, was named interim head coach. Harper is Valley’s fifth football coach in five years.

Keys to Victory

This is a huge game for Opelika. We need to win because we have three tough games with Smiths Station, Auburn and Hoover following this one. I am confidant that our coaches will have our team ready to play. We need a good noisy, supportive crowd to help our players.

We should be able to control both lines of scrimmage. If this happens our running game will keep the Rams offense off the field and our defense will stay fresh.

If the game is close in the fourth quarter Opelika’s depth should be the difference.

I hope we have control of the game before the fourth quarter.

Opelika dominates Central 37-7, improves to 2-0 in Area

Coach Brian Blackmon and his staff would like their team to play this way every week.

If there was a way for the team to perform the way OHS did against Central, it would be hard for any high school team to beat Opelika.

The Bulldogs dominated region rival Central last Friday in front of a packed house, 37-7.

The Red Devils were held scoreless until 2:40 were left in the game. This was long after the Dawgs had substituted for every starter.

The Dawgs started fast for the second week in a row, driving 65 yards in 11 plays to take a 7-0 lead after Jakell Mitchell plunged one yard for the TD and Justin Traylor kicked the PAT. Central’s first offensive play after the kickoff, a pass, was picked off by Stephen Roberts. Four plays later Terrance Griffen ran 14 yards for a touchdown to give the Dawgs a 14-0 lead, after Traylor added the PAT.

The Opelika fans were roaring and Opelika just kept playing inspired football. The defense kept stopping the potent Central offense and the Bulldog offense kept rolling.

Justin Traylor added a 22-yard field goal with 10 minutes left in the second quarter to extend the lead to 17-0. Central’s next possession was stopped after four plays, one of which was a punt. The Bulldogs then marched 74 yards and scored another TD on Calvin Bryant’s 20-yard run.

Central mounted their best drive of the first half late in the second quarter but Roberts put an abrupt stop to the drive. With the ball on the OHS 18-yard line Central QB Jamal Howard threw a pass that was intercepted by Stephen Roberts and returned 85 yards as the clock expired to make it a 30-0 score at halftime. The crowd went wild and the Red Devils went into the locker room knowing it was Opelika’s night.

The second half started with another Bulldog drive and touchdown on Mitchell’s two-yard scamper to make the score 37-0. The OHS starters had scored on every offensive possession and kept Central scoreless. Opelika’s defense held the high powered Red Devil offense to 147 yards while the Dawgs gained 274 rushing yards, 47 passing yards and 19 first downs.

Calvin Bryant rushed for 115 yards on 16 rushes, his second straight game rushing over 100 yards.

“This was a huge win for our program. I told our guys all week that we could beat Central if we followed the game plan — and boy did they do what we told them,” said a soaked Blackmon, after a power-aide bath given him by his players, in his post game radio show on the Kicker with me.

“We won the battle up front, offensive and defensive. I am so proud for our players,” added Blackmon.

This was a signature win for head coach Brian Blackmon. Yes, that includes beating  Prattville, the state champions last year. After losing the season opener to Benjamin Russell it would have been easy for our players to give up. The coaches kept coaching and the players kept working to get better. I know it’s just the third game of the season, but we dominated a top ten team that beat topped ranked Carver the previous week.

What I am saying is, let’s stay behind our Bulldogs. As you can see they have the potential of winning every game but it’s tough to win all of them. I am an Opelika fan everyday, not just when they win. I want you to be also. If you are a true Opelika fan, keep supporting our Bulldogs like you did last last Friday night. That was a great atmosphere.

Opelika vs Carver

Opelika will travel to Montgomery tomorrow night, yes, Saturday night, to play Carver at Crampton Bowl at 7 p.m. The game was moved due to Alabama State’s Thursday night game that was televised by ESPNU.

I guess ASU has more power than the high schools in Montgomery. Or maybe, more accurately, television has more power. Either way the game will be Saturday night.

You can listen to the Opelika/Carver game at 7 p.m. on WMXA 96.7 or on the web at mix967online.com. We have to broadcast on Mix 96.7 because Auburn University is playing at 6 p.m. and that broadcast has to be on 97.7 Kicker FM due to a contract between Kicker and the University.

Opelika defeats Robert E. Lee for first win

OHS head coach Brian Blackmon and his staff had a simple message for the Bulldogs after the BRHS game, “Start fast.”

The football team was listening because Opelika scored on their first four possessions to defeat R.E. Lee 33-7 at Bulldog Stadium.

The Dawgs took the opening possession 74 yards in eight plays for a TD after TJ Griffen ran four yards up the middle.

Calvin Bryant, getting his first playing time this year, ran for 120 yards in the first half while scoring three touchdowns. Bryant would end the night with 163 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Mathew Christian found Jakell Mitchell for the other score in the half. It was 26-0 before Lee scored a touchdown with two minutes before halftime to make it 26-7.

The Bulldogs rushed for 200 yards in the first half and ended the night with almost 400 yards for the night.

The defense started fast and did not allow a first down until late in the second quarter.

The line got a boost from Martin Scott, getting his first start this year, who had two sacks and an interception.

“All week long we stressed to the guys to start fast, we preached fast on offense and defense. Our first drive set the tone. We needed this win tonight and I am proud of our kids and coaches as well as the Opelika fans who packed our home side tonight,” said Blackmon on his post game radio show.

The Dawgs won’t have long to celebrate, Central comes to town undefeated and fresh off a victory over Carver.

We have not beaten the Red Devils in three years. Central is 2-0 after beating Russell County and Carver.

They have a new quarterback and several new skilled players. Head coach Woodrow Lowe is in his third year.

Keys to Victory

Opelika needs a huge crowd to help the team. We have to start fast again and have no turnovers. Establish the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The offense must be able to run the football which would take the pressure off QB Mathew Christian. If we are able to do these things we will win the game.

Go Dawgs!

You can listen to the Opelika vs. Central game on WKKR 97.7 KICKER FM or on the web at www.kickerfm.com.

The Opelika broadcast team will broadcast the game.

Opelika vs. Carver

The Opelika vs Carver game will be played next Saturday night, on Sept. 22, in Montgomery at Crampton Bowl.

The game will be broadcast on WMXA 96.7, due to the Auburn vs. LSU game on the KICKER.

One game does not make a season

OHS Football

The Opelika Bulldogs (0-1) were beaten by Benjamin Russell (1-0) 14-7 last week in Alexander City. It was not the start that all of us wanted but our OHS team has many new faces and not much experience. That may sound like an excuse, but it’s true.

Things got bad for the Dawgs at the very beginning of the game. OHS shanked the opening kickoff and Ben Russell took over at their own 47-yard line. Six plays later, it was 6-0 after an Alexander City TD and a missed extra point.

The mistakes would continue to mount for OHS. Six Bulldog first downs in the first half  were nullified due to penalties. Opelika ended the first half with one first down and zero points.

BRHS added their final touchdown with 1:08 left in the first half on a two-yard run that capped off a 52-yard drive. Opelika originally stopped the Wildcats on the two point try, but the eighth Bulldog penalty of the half gave BRHS another chance from the one yard line. This time they converted and took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Bulldogs held the football all but two minutes and 35 seconds of the third quarter but could not score. Every time OHS got close to the goal line a penalty would back us up. The Bulldogs drove inside the Wildcat 30-yard line late in the third quarter, but received four major distance penalties and wound up punting on fourth down with 58 yards to go to pick up the first down. That’s fourth and 58! Might be a record.

Coach Blackmon’s team never quit; they kept battling and stopped the Wildcats on several drives. The Dawgs finally scored a TD on a four-yard Jakell Mitchell run. Caz Blacken added the PAT to make it 14-7.

The Dawg defense stopped Ben Russell again and got the ball back with five minutes left in the game, but the Opelika offense was unable to mount a drive to tie the game. BRHS took over and ran out the final two minutes to earn their first win of the 2012 season.

Sophomore Bulldog quarterback Mathew Christian finished the game 10 of 16 for 133 yards and one interception. Coach Blackmon, on his post game radio show with me, made no excuses and took the blame for the loss.

“You can blame me for this loss. It is my job to get our guys prepared to play and motivate them to start fast. We played pretty good on defense after we settled down, but we struggled on offense. We couldn’t run the ball, which put too much pressure on our sophomore quarterback (Mathew Christian). We have got to watch the film, correct our mistakes, run the football and get ready for our first region game next week,” said Blackmon.

Opelika will host new region for Robert E. Lee (Montgomery) tonight at Bulldog Stadium at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs will get a boost from three starters who return after not dressing out last week.

Robert E. Lee was beaten by Wetumpka last week. The Generals are trying to get the program back to their glory years when coach Spence McCracken won three state titles there before he was hired away by Opelika. They lost one of their better players two weeks before the Wetumpka game, because he transferred to Carver.

If the Bulldogs improve, avoid drive-killing penalties and start faster this week, we should win this game. A win would ease the pain from last week’s loss. It is also very important that we win our first region game.

Keys to Victory

The keys to victory are simple, but sometimes hard to execute: first, establish both lines of scrimmage. If we do this on offense, it will allow our running game to excel which will take the pressure off QB Mathew Christian. If we control the defensive line, R.E. Lee’s offense will not be able to move the ball consistently which will make it harder for them to score.

The special teams have to improve. We have got to be able to kick the ball deep on kickoffs. Winston Smith T has been a pleasant surprise punting; he will keep improving which will make this phase of the special teams better.

I know our coaches have an excellent game plan. We need the entire Opelika family to get behind our team and stay positive. One game does not make or break a season.

You can listen to the Opelika vs. Robert E. Lee game on WKKR 97.7 KICKER FM or on the web at www.kickerfm.com starting at 6:30 p.m. with “The Coach Brian Blackmon” pre-game show followed by live coverage from Bulldog Stadium at 6:45 p.m. After the game you can hear coach Blackmon’s thoughts on his post game show.

Following the OHS broadcast you can catch all of the high school scores until midnight on the “High School Scoreboard Show” hosted by Eddie Owens and Jere Bavaro.

OMS vs. Wetumpka

The OMS seventh grade bulldogs opened the season with a 28-8 win vs. Wetumpka in Bulldog Stadium Thursday night.

Ladamian Webb scored two TD’s and two two-point conversions. Dayton Thomas also scored two TD’s. Hank Brown led the offensive line. Elijah Miller and Taylor Jones led the OMS defense. Chase Adams had an interception.

The OMS eighth graders defeated Wetumpka 19 -0. John David Worth opened the scoring with a two-yard run and defensive tackle Khalif Kellum finished the scoring for the half with a 36-yard fumble return after a big hit by Zach Yancey. Shabasken Holloway added a six-yard run and Brandon Gaffney added the PAT.  Paul Money and Rakavius Chambers led the offensive line. Christian Collins, Zach Yancey, Henry Smith T and Weldrin Ford led the OMS defense. Davis Gafford and Collins had interceptions. Both teams continue next Thursday night at Bulldog Stadium vs. Valley.
