OHS football team has practice game with Eufaula

Spring Football

Coach Brian Blackmon and his staff completed spring football practice by traveling to Eufaula to play the Tigers in a practice game.

The Bulldogs dominated Eufaula the entire game, scoring 47 points and allowing 7 points. The scrimmage was set up for starters to play three quarters and reserves the fourth quarter.

The coaches decided to play 90 players in the first half due to the 27-0 score at intermission.

The Bulldogs took the opening drive 84 yards in eight plays to take an early 6-0. The PAT was missed. The rout was on ... we scored on our next five possessions while keeping the Tigers from crossing the 50 yard line.

The Bulldogs looked like a well oiled machine. The team played hard and fast. This was a different look than one year ago when Eufaula beat us 14-0 in the spring game.

Quarterback Mathew Christian (junior next year) was 15 of 18 for 224 yards and two touchdown passes. Running back Jarquavious Crawford rushed for 107 yards, JaKell Mitchell caught eight passes for 98 yards and a touchdown, Marquise Fulton caught six passes for 67 yards and Devarien Barnes ran for 77 yards as the number two back. The offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage. They gave Christian time to throw and opened up huge holes for the backs.

The defense took control on the first snap. Chase Baker sacked the Tigers quarterback on the defense’s first play. This set the tone. Our front line controlled the line; the Tigers could not run or throw the football. It was a long night for Eufaula.

Coach Brian Blackmon and the coaching staff were proud of their team. Blackmon, coaching his fourth spring practice, says this team is ahead of any of his other teams at this point.

The kicking did not get much work during the eight practices. This was the only area that was not as sharp as normal.

I know it’s only the spring but our team looked good. We are not ready for a long season but we are close to being ready.

I have just completed my 34th year as “The Voice of the Bulldogs.” This was the best we have looked in the spring during my tenure..

I know it’s hard to win every game and make it to the Super 6 Championship and I am not predicting the number of wins or how far we will advance next season. I am making a factual statement about our football team at this point in the year.

The guys will have a few weeks off and then start summer workouts. The spring game gives everyone confidence heading into the summer.

The season will start on Aug. 30 against Benjamin Russell at Bulldog Stadium. This will be the first game in the newly renovated Bulldog Stadium. The 2014 season should be fun; we have a chance of having a good team.

We need to keep supporting the Opelika program. Good things are ahead.

OHS track teams participate in 6A State Track Meet

OHS Track Team

The Opelika girls’ and boys’ track teams participated in the 6A State Track Meet in Mobile last weekend. The girls finished 10th overall and the boys finished 20th.

Top performers on the girls’ side: Emma Garner finished fourth in both the 1600 and the 3200 meter events and fifth in the 800 meter run. The girls’ 4x100 finished third overall. The team included Brittney Johnson, Jakayla Hand, Breonna Lockhart and Kala Spinks. Jakayla Hand finished eighth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump.

Top performers on the boys’ side was the 4X800 meter relay team which included James Ray Thrash, Ben Bryant, Shakiel Parker and Daniel Tolbert. That team finished eighth overall and Ben Bryant finished seventh overall in the 3200-meter-run.

OHS Football

The Opelika football team continues to hold spring training. Coach Blackmon and his staff are working with 97 players. The Bulldogs are coming off a record year, playing in the 6A Championship game at the Super 6 at Jordan-Hare stadium last year.

Coach Blackmon talked about the team yesterday on my radio show, “On The Mark.” “I am pleased with the effort and attitude of the players. They are all working hard and understand what it takes to be a great team. The defense has a chance to be good. We are fast and flying to the football, our returning players are helping the new players learn and both are complimenting each other. As always the defense is ahead of the offense at this point. We are trying to create depth at every position. It helps to have six D-linemen because they can rotate and stay fresh. The secondary is the most experienced group of players, led by Stephen Roberts, Malcom Buggs and Aldrecus Wilson. The offensive line is big, but we need depth there, too. Sophomore Drew Kyser, 6-feet-5-inches, 270 pounds (center) is our leader after starting this past season. Drew is getting attention from college scouts and has two more years to keep improving and growing.

“Quarterback Mathew Christian (sophomore) is way ahead of this time last year and showing great leadership. We have to get the ball to our skill players which include JaKell Mitchell and Marquise Fulton. These guys will be seniors and know how our offense works.

“The special teams are the same. Quindesky Whitlow will kick off, Chazden Blackman, a freshman last season, continues to improve his place-kicking, punter Winston Smith T has two more years and gets better everyday,” said Blackmon

The Dawgs will scrimmage tomorrow on the practice field at 10 a.m. The stadium has not been cleared to hold practice or scrimmage because of safety issues.

OHS will travel to Eufaula on May 14 for a practice game at 7 p.m. You can listen to the spring game on your home for Opelika athletics, WKKR 97.7 kicker FM, and on the web at www.kickerfm.com  Airtime will be 6:45 p.m.

The ninth grade will scrimmage Eufaula at 6 p.m.

Professional women's track club supports children

Special to the Opelika Observer

Forty-six children and volunteers from Project Uplift gathered together recently and enjoyed “It’s a Movie Night,” sponsored by the professional women track and field athletes training in Auburn. The feature film was “Wreck-It Ralph” and the kids loved watching Ralph fight to break his video game villain stereotype and learn to appreciate and love the hero within himself. The professional athletes provided the popcorn, nachos, juice and water so essential to kids’ enjoyment of the movie. Their enjoyment was evident in their facial expressions, excitement and stuffed tummies

These amazing athletes and others like them help Project Uplift achieve its goal of reducing and preventing juvenile delinquency by providing safe positive activities for area children to participate in. Project Uplift personnel are extremely grateful for efforts such as this one. The program could not have continued to function for the past 40 years without the continued support of community groups, organizations and influential leaders.

The Professional Track and Field Athletes of Auburn include:

Kerron Stewart (Jamaica) - Silver medalist at the 2008 Olympics in the 100 meters and bronze medalist at the 2008 Olympics in 200 meters.

Nivea Smith (Bahamas) - First Bahamian to medal at the 2007 World Youth Games.

Sheniqua Ferguson (Bahamas) - World Junior Champion in 2008 in the 200 meters.

Anthonique Strachan (Bahamas) - Professional athlete at 17 years of age, Puma Rising Star Award; 2012 Best Junior in the World Award; and 2011 CARIFTA gold medalist 100 and 200 meters.

Kimberley Laing (Jamaica) - 2010 SEC champion in 100 meter hurdles.

Bianca Stuart (Bahamas) - Bahamas national record holder in the long jump, 22 feet 4.25 inches.

Project Uplift is a program of the Lee County Youth Development Center. Its main goal is helping children develop constructive, happy lives so that juvenile delinquency in the county will decrease. Project Uplift is similar to the big brother/big sister program in that children and volunteers establish a one-to-one relationship. These relationships help the children build self-esteem, so that they are better equipped to make good choices and grow into happy, productive adults.

The children in the program are between the ages of 5 and 12 and share common problems and characteristics such as single parent homes, low incomes, unmet basic needs, school problems, no organized after-school activities, family problems, personality dysfunction, trauma or may be at serious risk for delinquency, pregnancy, drugs and gangs.

Spring sports schedule coming to an end

Baseball

The baseball teams season ended without Opelika making the playoffs because the Bulldogs lost to Auburn in the final game of the regular season. They missed out despite winning more games, 15, than in any year since 2008. The Dawgs forced the issue by beating Auburn in game two of the three game series bringing it down to the final game.  AHS won 8-5 to make the playoffs.

Coach Scott Sullivan, in his second year as head coach, continues to improve the OHS program.

Tennis

The OHS girls tennis team finished second in the Sectional tournament this week. OHS lost two very close matches to AHS to finish behind the Tigers, 53 to 49 points.

Meg Larson, Ashley Robertson and Kelcie Carpenter finished in first place. Anna Lazenby and April Wade finished second. Doubles winners were Lazenby and Robertson.

The girls will play in the State tournament next Thursday and Friday at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

The boys were still playing their sectional meet at press time.

Spring Football

Coach Brian Blackmon will start spring practice on April 29. The Dawgs will have 15 school days to complete ten practices including the spring game. The Bulldogs are coming off an incredible 2012 season, in which they played for the 6A State Championship at Jordan-Hare Stadium in the Super 6 Championship.

The team has several returning starters but will need several other players to step in and start.

Several OHS athletes are being recruited by Division-1 schools. Those players now being recruited include Stephen Roberts, JaKell Mitchell and Malcom Buggs. I am sure when the season is over, other players will be recruited.

Roberts and Mitchell have been recruited by most SEC teams including Alabama and Auburn.

Construction

Crews are working every day to get our school and football stadium and athletic building completed. The stadium is beginning to shape up and will be a beautiful site when completed. Pictured to the right you will see crews installing the new synthetic turf. The turf will be completely installed by Monday.

Corporate Sponsorship

The Opelika All-Sports Booster club will be sending out letters to existing sponsors for the 2013-14 school year. The plans will stay the same as well as the cost.

We have a few new things to offer our Corporate Sponsors.

A Corporate Sponsor has the opportunity to advertise on the new scoreboard. The sponsor has an opportunity to have the business’s name on the two marquees at the same time. These names will rotate every five seconds starting at 5:30 p.m. until the game is over.

The names will rotate continuous every five seconds. The two marquees are located on the bottom of the scoreboard.

Under another plan, the Big Board Sponsor-A sponsor can have the company logo or name on the big screen of the scoreboard. These will rotate every 15 seconds from 5:30 p.m. to 6:40 p.m. and after the game until the stadium is cleared. The sponsor will receive six reserved tickets to every home game, four passes to every OCS sporting event (excluding playoff games) and two reserved parking passes for football games. The cost for this package is $3,000.

If you are interested in any of our corporate sponsor plans, call me, (D.Mark Mitchell) at (334) 319-0467 or email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
