Coveted Closet opens in downtown Opelika

by Ann Cipperly

Opelika Observer

When Holly Surrency was looking to open her own salon four and a half years ago, she decided on downtown Opelika, as she felt a sense of excitement in the changes taking place and believed something big was going to happen with new businesses. With her success in Envy Salon on Railroad Avenue, she decided to expand and open a clothing boutique when the space next door became available.

The doors to Coveted Closet opened a few weeks ago in the same elegant simplicity style as the salon. A sparkling chandelier, original hardwood floors, antique fixtures and spacious fitting rooms with high ceilings lend graciousness to the boutique.

“In our world as hairdressers, it goes together with fashion,” says Holly. “We care as much about what we wear as what our hair looks like. I knew that downtown Opelika didn’t have any clothing boutiques, and there are so many in downtown Auburn.  I felt with the salon doing so well, and the traffic coming there, that we would be able to open a boutique for the women who come to the salon or who come downtown to eat at the restaurants.

“The goal is to have clothes here for women of all ages, and also at the price point that women can afford. The prices are great. The most expensive items are going to be the coats. I think the cost is the thing that surprises people the most. I wanted the boutique to look uncluttered with soft cream colors, so people think it will be expensive until they look at the prices, and they are really surprised at the value.”

When Holly goes to market, her 22- year-old daughter, Laural, flies in from Charlotte, N.C., to help select clothes. Some others in the salon also help with the selection, so there is a variety of ages to balance the choices.  This assures clothes in the boutique will appeal to different ages.

Along with clothes, the boutique also offers jewelry and accessories.

In the center of the boutique is a sitting area, especially nice for husbands.

Since there would be construction for the boutique, Holly began to think about expanding the salon as well. “I began to think about what was not working in the salon and how we could make it better. We added the processing area, closed off the shampoo room to make it more secluded, added the color bar and a new reception area.

“We want to offer the best service we can to our customers,” says Holly. “After four years of the salon being open, thinking about how it can be better for the customers and adding the boutique, it sums up everything a woman would need.

“You can come in here and get a really nice outfit for a good price, go to the salon and get your hair done, have a makeover with Bare Minerals makeup and get a manicure,” adds Holly. “It is everything a woman needs to feel good about herself.”

Downtown Opelika welcomes its newest business: The Overall Company

by Hilary Hawks

Associate Editor

The idea for this hip and trendy new spot began a little over two years ago between longtime friends and Opelika citizens, Laura and Jay Pritchard and Ali and Ty Maloney.

Ali Maloney had always wanted to open up her own bakery; Laura Pritchard wanted to have her own coffee shop. So the two women, with their husbands, decided to put the ideas together and it was full steam ahead as the planning began.

This new hot spot is located in the same building as the original Overall Company from the mid-1800s. Back then, Overall manufactured Eagle Brand Overalls up until the Civil War when they began producing uniforms for the Southern military.

The Pritchard’s and Maloney’s figured that integrating the original name into their new venture would be appropriate.

And on Aug. 11, 2012, The Overall Company had its grand opening.

Overall offers handcrafted coffees that come straight from the farm and are roasted to perfection within five to 10 days to ensure a high quality and tasty freshness.

One of the coolest specialties offered at Overall are their handcrafted popsicles, or rather, “pops.” These vary in flavors from banana pudding, caramel, cookies and cream and chocolate hazelnut. Ali Maloney, the “pops” connoisseur, strives to use the freshest and locally-grown ingredients.

The Overall Company is a two-story building located on the corner of Avenue B and 10th Street in Opelika.

Along with the coffee bar and a freezer full of delicious pops, the first floor has a unique selection of wines and specialty beers for sale. The staff is eager to offer their ideas on which cheeses, also sold at the shop, pair best with the available beverages.

If you are craving something more than a decadent pastry to go with your cup of tea or hot coffee, then try a sandwich like the classic BLT or pimento cheese with bacon on a fresh biscuit.

In the next week, Ali Maloney said they hope to expand their menu even more.

“We’re hoping to have an off-site ice cream truck to sell our pops,” Maloney said. “And we will be offering more beer, wine, tea and coffee tastings.”

Since the grand opening in August, business has been booming for Overall.

“The business has been doing great,” Maloney said. “I’ve been surprised how many students have been coming, especially from Auburn.”

With the blues coffee-shop-type music playing overhead, one cannot help but notice the modern, cozy and creative decor. Inspired and decorated by Ashely Marsh, all of the lamps, chairs, tables and throw pillows that customers use while sipping their coffee and reading their books has a price tag on it. This eclectic mix of simple and unique decorating provides a relaxed ambience for people of all ages to enjoy.

The second level of the shop offers a place for local artists to display their artwork.

If you are interested in doing so, stop by and drop off your information and some samples of your work. Also upstairs is a large patio with ample seating, fans to keep cool and a superb view of downtown Opelika.

Chances are, if you stop by The Overall Company, you will be warmly greeted by Laura, Jay, Ali or Ty.

Ali may come by your table with a homemade pastry, like a mouthwatering double-chocolate brownie for you to try. And Laura will always greet you with a warm smile and chances are, if you go more than once, she’ll know your name.

The Overall Company is all local and all original. A one-of-a-kind spot and most definitely a great asset to a growing Opelika.

For more information, you can visit their website at www.overallco.com, find them on Facebook or call them at (334) 742-0100.

Overall is open Monday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. until 9 p.m., Friday and Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Shoreline Grill holds grand opening, with a little help from Lee County’s elected officials

Special to the Opelika Observer

Ordinarily the Observer wouldn’t be covering the grand opening of a seafood restaurant in the Lake Harding( eastern) area of Lee County but this wasn’t an ordinary grand opening.

The Shoreline Grill is located on the site of the former Peppermill Grill and is owned and operated by Nancy Crew. Crew stresses that Shoreline Grill is a totally new restaurant with a different, up-scale menu.

It is located at the corner of Lee Road 379 which runs from Valley to Smiths Station) and Lee Road 344.

District 4 Commissioner Robert Ham felt badly that the former restaurant, the Peppermill Grill, had to close its doors in large part because Lee Road 379 had to be closed for almost a year for the replacement of a bridge across Soap Creek near Smiths Station.

The bridge closure effectively shut off restaurant patrons from the Smiths Station-Phenix City area.

To try and make reparations to the new owner and to help the Shoreline Grill get off to a good start, Commissioner Ham called every one of the elected officials — both county and state level — who represent Commission District 4.

Every single one of them agreed to come, and here’s the extraordinary part, every one of them agreed to pay for their own meal!

Don’t you just love it when people, especially politicians, do something just because it’s the right thing to do?
